Imagining Cuba apart from the history of its own music is impossible. In our nation, the origin and development of music has been, at all times, in intimate contact with the life of its people. Of all the music that comes out of the Cuban people, Son reigns supreme. And within Son and in the musical culture of Cuba as a whole, the Tres holds a position of great importance. Read complete article here: http://www.cubaabsolutely.com/Culture/article_music_traditional.php?id=Pancho-Amat The Cuban Tres is a guitar-like instrument with three courses (groups) of two strings each for a total of six strings. It most probably was born in the area of the Sierra Maestra Mountains, in the eastern part of Cuba, around the mid to late 18th Century, and had its ancestry in the Spanish Guitar. It is sometimes referred to as "Cuban Tres Guitar," "Tres Cubano" or "Tres Guitar." Some might think that the tres is just another guitar, but the major difference between the two is in playing the instrument. Unlike the guitar, in the tres, chords are seldom strummed. Several famous musicians have preferred the tres for their music, notably, Nené Manfugás, Faustino Oramas, Alfredo Boloña, Arsenio Rodríguez and Compay Segundo. In recent decades, one "tresero," or "tresista" as he prefers to be called, has placed his very singular imprint on his interpretation of the tres, that is, Francisco Leonel Amat Rodríguez, better known as Pancho Amat or "El Tresero Mayor de Cuba" [The Top Cuban Tresero]. Natural Sound A number of young Cuban baseball players have successfully fled Cuba and are now seeking refuge in Nicaragua. Earlier this year, the baseball players escaped by boat to the Bahamas but were then forcibly repatriated. This time, they planned their illegal second escape in total secrecy - arriving unexpectedly at Auguosto Cesar Sandino airport in Managua on Friday evening. The great escape part two. Seven Cubans, including four baseball players, reached Nicaragua after fleeing Cuba in a small boat earlier this week. The six Cuban men and one woman arrived on Friday in Nicaragua's capital, Managua, On arrival, the Nicaraguan government granted them temporary refugee status. One player described how they had set off in a small boat from Pinar del Rio on the western tip of Cuba. They were then rescued by another craft in the Caribbean and taken to the Nicaraguan port of Puerto Cabezas on Thursday. From Puerto Cabezas they boarded a flight to the capital, Managua. All are apparently in good health. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "To be free - above all else to be free and to be able to feel at ease in a country like Nicaragua - that has treated us so well." SUPER CAPTION: Angel Lopez, refugee SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I am happy. I feel good. I want to be free." SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lova, refugee The athletes are the latest baseball players to abandon Cuba, following the highly publicised flight of pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez in January. He fled to Costa Rica and later signed a six point six (m) million U-S dollar four-year contract with the New York Yankees. The players reportedly were with Cuba's Villa Clara team. The Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation confirmed that the baseball players had previously fled from Cuba to the Bahamas. The players were repatriated to Cuba on May 18. The foundation said it had helped arrange haven in Nicaragua for the Cubans. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Well these are people that - due to the efforts made by President Aleman - decided to make a bid for freedom and decided that they would take up Nicaragua's offer and come here." SUPER CAPTION: Ninoska Perez, Director of the Cuban-American National Foundation Nicaragua's government had offered in May to accept the Cubans as refugees in order to avoid the repatriation. According to an unconfirmed report made by the Cuban-American National Foundation, the Cubans' final destination is Miami, where they hope to travel to in the next few days. There was no immediate reaction from the Cuban government and the Nicaraguan embassy in Havana said it had no details. The national team hasn't won a major international tournament in nearly a decade. Ismael Sene, a Cuban baseball historian says despite a dip in popularity, baseball remains a popular topic for many. "We have been losing fans, but we have to wait to recover the fans because when you reach to the finals, the people go to the games and the people talk about baseball in the streets even if the baseball is not the highest quality it used to be," he says. Irvin Negrin Munoz, a member of the "MLB Pena" fan club devoted to the St. Louis Cardinals catcher Brayan Pena, agrees that Cuban baseball is not what should be. "Truthfully for those who know and like baseball, they will know that baseball is at a critical moment. The level of the players, from the highest level which is the National Series, there are too many technical imperfections," he says. Now authorities are considering once-unimaginable changes to save the socialist country's national game - reforms partly prompted by Obama's detente. Major League Baseball is in talks with both nations' governments on a potential deal that could make it easier for Cuban ballplayers to play in the United States without having to sneak away at international tournaments or risk high-seas defections with human smugglers. In February the Obama administration implemented a policy to let Cubans earn salaries in the U.S. as long as they don't pay special taxes back home. Those regulations specifically mention athletes, along with artists and performers. Baseball fan Negrin Munoz, enjoys watching Cuban exiles play in North American teams. "The true fans of baseball want to see a quality team, and moreover the Cubans who are playing there....I am a baseball fan, and I am a fan of the Met's (New York Mets), and I like them for the history. Now I like them even more because Yoenis Cespedes (Cuban player) is on the team there. It's something I follow," he says. Meanwhile many Cuban children are taking up soccer instead of baseball, and idolizing stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. While a single ball is all it takes for 22 kids to play soccer, gloves, bats and other baseball equipment are expensive and scarce. These children playing a junior game in Havana retain an enthusiasm for the sport. Ten-Year-Old, Roland Cue Garcia, says baseball gives him confidence: "I like to play baseball because when I play I feel happy....and when the spectators applaud, I get excited, and I like to play outfield, second base, anywhere they want me to play." Joan Hidalgo Valdes, who is also ten-years-old, says that he aspires to become a great player one day: ''When I grow up, I could be a great player, playing in mayor leagues and playing good technical games.'' President Barack Obama joined Cuban President Raul Castro to watch the Tampa Bay Rays play Cuba's national team at an exhibition baseball game during his historic trip to Havana in March. http://blog.euromonitor.com With recent news that the US is restoring full diplomatic relations with Cuba, analysts are speculating that the trade embargo between the two countries may be lifted. It is expected that Iconic soft drink brands such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi will quickly enter Cuba if the trade embargo is lifted, but these companies may find it difficult to compete with both local players and Peru's Aje Groupe, which has established itself as a strong competitor in emerging Latin American markets.

Cuban baseball authorities on Wednesday said they're willing to negotiate with Major League Baseball (MLB) the hiring of players from the Island after Washington announced new measures to ease trade and travel restrictions and just a few days before president Barack Obama's visit to this Caribbean nation. At a press conference, Higinio Velez, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation, said the new actions taken by the White House "open the door" to future negotiations with MLB and can also help bilateral relations on the political aspect. Soundbite (Spanish): Higinio Velez, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation "This is something new that will start and it's very good this opening is going to happen that opening. What we want is for our players to play in Major League Baseball, just like anywhere in the world to without losing their nationality and establishing residency in a third country to play in their leagues. We see this very well and it seems that this process is about to begin" Next March 22, the Tampa Bay Rays of MLB will play the Cuban national team at an exhibition game in Havana's Latinoamericano Stadium where Obama is expected to throw out the first pitch. The 42,000 seat stadium has undergone a capital renovation of almost 400,000 U.S. dollars for this game which will mark the second time an MLB team has played in Havana after 1959. U.S. regulations up to today demanded Cuban born players to acquire residence in a third country to file for free agency or qualify as international players in MLB. Soundbite (Spanish): Higinio Velez, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation "We have to wait because these restrictions are subject to laws. Hopefully we have the possibility to talk about the hiring of player but also to exchange on the technological and operations field. We want all this to start as soon as possible" The new rules will increase ability of Cubans in the United States to earn stipends and salaries beyond living expenses, including professional athletes, musicians, and scientists, among others. Obama will visit Cuba on March 20-22 as part of the rapprochement that he and President Raul Castro announced in December 2014.
